how to dual boot xp pro and 2000 pro?

i need to install 2000 pro along with xp pro that i am currently using. i have dual booted 98/xp pro berfore but i think 2000 is a different process. can anyone tell me the best way to do this on both of these configurations : 2 hard drives and 1 hard drive partitioned?
if possable i do not want to use a 3rd party program to dual boot, also can i keep my current version intact of xp pro or do i need to reinstall it?

for anyone asking why i need both - it is becuase i need to become familiar with 2000 and dont want lose xp.

XP will install nicely AFTER 2000 and give you the regular OS choice.

thanks reading other messages i found out to install 2000 first then install xp.

my new question is this: i am adding a second hard drive for 2000 and was wondering if this would work - will disconecting my current hard drive and then installing 2000 on the other one then reconnecting my current hard drive save me from reinstalling xp or will this just mess things up?

yes that will work. B/c xp setup will see your other OS and install a boot loader.
Um keep both hdds pluged up slave/master.. but anyway install 2k which you got already just install xp after. dont matter it can be on same hdd but not parition. GO FOR NTFS BABY!!

do they have to be slave/master? i decided not to buy a new hard drive so will put my older ata66 drive on for 2000 and if they are both on the same ide cable wont that slow down my main drive? or becuase only one will be working at one time because each will be a seperate OS it wont matter?

It does not matter much, unless you have some really old motherboard. You should be able to select the boot by drive, regardless of position.

It also doesn't matter how you install the OS's. Win2k then XP or WinXp then 2k. The later only requires you to copy the NTLDR file and the NTDetect.COM file (found in \I386 folder) to the root drive, replacing the existing ones, from the Windows XP CD.

Remember these files in the root drive are Hidden, Archived, and Read-only by default. So you have to remove the attribs before copying and replacing them from the CD.
