How to drive auto stick/sport shift?

Bought a 99 TL a month or two ago and it has auto stick transmission in it, but I usually just use auto. How exactly am I supposed to shift? Do I keep my foot on the gas while up/downshifting or do i have to let up on the gas when I shift? When I' coming to a stop, do I have to downshift?

Don't bother. You have an automatic transmission. Stop being a poseur and using that silly "manual shift" mode, which is just nonsense, and let the computer handle the shifts.

Thanks for that insight!

In other news, my manual is in my trunk, in my car, at the parking garage, 1 hour away.

Then you're all set. Just go to the parking garage, find your car, open the trunk, locate the manual, then read. This is how to find the answer you seek.

Good luck on your quest, and god speed!

Something to look forward to for later then.

I got news for you...You still haven't driven a stick. With that car you can just shift up and down through the gears by sliding the lever forward or backwards. Read your owners manual, it will tell you in there when you're supposed to shift.

Just leave it in D. Those sport shift transmissions are useless and gimmicky anyway.

don't bother. the lag (well, for the 3's auto shift) is horrendous. I'm sure the TL's is probably better.. I mean, it does cost like 15k more.. heh. But forget it. worthless.

It's not too bad, actually in the TL. It's much much better than the one I had in my Sebring a few years ago.

It won't help you one bit when accelerating from a stop, but if you are in traffic it can help out. Downshift into 3rd or 2nd and put your RPM into the "sweet spot". You'll have much better throttle response for passing, etc.

Don't worry about letting off the gas when shifting. Just do it. The car protects itself from morons so you can't screw it up even if you try.

like everyone else says, it's still an auto.

but it's still fun to play with when you're bored - it'll allow you to rev higher then when the computer would normally shift. ps, don't drop from 2nd gear to 1st, let the computer do it.

That's what I was going for...the stuff's there, might as well use it.

Yeah, there's nothing wrong with auto. Take what you have and make the most out of it

As for the tiptronic.. I don't think you have to worry about stalling or anything. If you shift too early, it won't engage the next gear until ready. At least that's how it was on the A4

I can't drive automatics anymore. I always jam my left foot onto that huge brake pedal and nearly set the airbags off.

LOL. I do the same thing, left foot catches the edge of the brake pedal and it's panic stop time. Scares the crap out of me... and I assume the people behind me also.

The TL sport shift automatically shifts the gears for you from 1st to 2nd...(i think Acura/Honda is the only one that does this...the other makers allow you to make this shift manually)...at least my 00 TL and 05 TL do this...

basically, i just used it 'off the line'...once I got up to about 35 mph, I would flip the shifter from 'sport shift' to 'auto' mode...it does allow you to accelarate better, but that's about it...

I wouldn't mess around with that TL tranny if I were you.

My friend's mom has a newer TL than than yours and she's on at the second or third transmission.

The transmission problems on TLs seem to mainly affect the 2000+ models with 5-speed trannies. The 99's seem to be ok, but there was a batch or two that had transmission probelms.

Hope I wasn't one of the unlucky ones.
