At my office we usually dress pretty casually but if someone shows up for a job interview without at least a jacket and tie they face a serious uphill battle. If you don't know how to dress like a grown-up for a grown-up occassion like a job interview, then how can we put you in front of a client paying top dollar for your time? Almost all our clients wear jeans and flannel shirts, but I would never even consider attending a meeting with them without wearing a suit.

Like Saltin said, if you look like a professional then (as far as they know) you are a professional.

Of all the interviews that I've had that have turned into job offers, I've always worn business/corporate casual clothes: a pair of pressed khakis, a polo shirt or short-sleeved dress shirt, and some decent dress shoes. I also usually get my hair cut just prior, make sure I have fresh breath, and that my cologne isn't too strong.

I always laugh at the other interviewees that show up in suits because it makes me think they're trying to impress the interviewer with how they dress and not what they know. And as the interviewer, frankly, I feel the same way.

It's all about confidence in knowing your stuff, if you ask me...

Suit. First impressions are everything and how you look is paramount in an interview.

<< For an interview, dress one level above what they wear to work. You don't want to be in a suit if the person interviewing you is in sweatpants and flipflops. >>

ROFLMAO!!!!
wanna know why I'm laughing so hard? because the exact situation you describe happened to me. I went in wearing a full business suit and the guy behind the desk is in sweats and a Washington State hooded sweatshirt.

And here's the funniest part....the company was Microsoft. No joke!

As for my advice, go with the nice pants, collared shirt, and a tie. Nothing more, nothing less. Be sure to have dress shoes or at least Doc Marten type shoes too. No sneakers. Semi-formal is the norm. Anything more than that is overkill for IT interviews. I've had plenty of internship/full time interviews with IT companies and you're always safe in semi-formal attire.

Good luck!

Acutally went out and picked up a suit today. Can't believe how costly these suits can be. But the feel is definitely nice, a bit weird too might I add, a big change for sure from the usual jeans and sweater. Black with a small blend of grayish colour.
