Steam.
And yes, I think people still play it.

ok, just downloaded from steam, started a game, there were about 20 servers with players, about 200 without players, and the game supports 2560x1440.
So, yeah, its still a thing.

CS Source is also running strong. There seems to be well over 100 servers with active players.
Lots of swearing in game, especially racial slurs and such. The game doesn't really look any better than CS 1.6 which I thought was interesting.

i'm seeing it available as "Counter Strike Released November 1, 2000 for $9.99" Is that what you just paid for it?

To be honest I am 32 years old and I still play sometime cs 1.6 . I have it on Steam also you can download it from <removed> , and just to know with this coronavirus my server is full all time ... before we was 12 persons on it , now is 32/32 :)

Removed download link...
If you want to promote it, get it from Steam Direct, and not a 3rd party.

We do not allow the promotion of 3rd party links.
We do not recommend downloading from 3rd party links.
If you want to link something, please do it from the vendor directly, or a authorized retailer.

Is steam the only "legit" way to get 1.6? for $9.99?

i mean... it sounds like from aigomorla removing a link i found on google as "promoting a 3rd party" whereas recommending we give business to Steam is ok ("1st party")

you have an issue with the moderation? Make a thread in MD.

well, Steam is the official retailer of 1.6, so, yeah, it's "first party".

honestly, i think ALL the CS are old (and haven't aged well), and while i get that 1.6 was more 1337, because of the bunnyhop, CSGO has a far more active .. i mean, ONE OF THE WORLD's MOST ACTIVE FPS communities, which overrides any "more 1337z" that 1.6 may have.

It sounds childish to argue this point. Counter Strike is a Valve/Source game and therefore it's available on Steam. Get it from them or waste your time and money searching Google for sketchy third-party alternatives only to realize you should just suck it up and buy it on Steam.

Why don't you just switch to CS GO? It's far more active than 1.6.
