How to do long range WLAN (radius of 500m - 1000m)?

My family and some of my friends live in a small town with very limited broadband access. Some parts of town have DSL and some don't. I was talking to one of those people that can't get DSL and the conversation went in the direction of "Wonder if there is a way to do long range W-Lan from houses that have DSL to ones that don't"

My brother has DSL and so does the neighbour. There is a 100MBit link already between them for gaming. I was thinking about putting an aerial on the roof of one of the houses and run the rest with routers, switches and all the usual stuff.

But the wireless is a question. Does anybody know of a WLAN transmission array that is not tooo expensive and has above mentiuoned range. I also heard of people modding normal Acces-points and hooking them up to CB Antennas or something like that to get a range boost (wouldn't that also require a signal amplifier?). Does anyone know a site where I could find more info?

My friend has gotten in contact with a user-group that has a setup like the one we would like but replies are slow in coming... they are obviously busy or something. Any hints would be appreciated!!
