How to do a PS4 HD swap with out losing games and data

I know that the HD in my PS4 is under the plastic cover but how do I transfer the games and data to the new hard drive. I just hit the 500GB with FF XV. I deleted a few games that I was not playing anymore but I want a more room.

I swapped out my 500GB drive with a 2TB recently and it was a breeze... I can confirm that the newer software supports simple backup/restore functionality

Took a little while, but everything was perfect when it was restored.

There is a new transfer from PS4 to another PS4 recently. You just use a LAN network cable to connect the two. I never tried it. I learned my lesson about backups.

You backup to an external USB drive. Either flash or HDD. As long as it's got enough space you can do a full backup (games/saves), if not I HIGHLY recommend doing the manual games saves backup. There is a 'select all' button so it's just a matter or waiting for it to finish.

Other things you'd need to do is synch your trophies before backup and after backup, deactivate your PS4 for content. If you miss that last step you'll have to go on a computer to deactivate it.

Best of luck.

So can I just take out the my current PS4 hard drive, install the new one with the right format and then plug in the old drive via a sata usb cable to the PS4 and just select restore to system drive? The other option looks like I would a third drive to do backup? Can't that just be skipped altogether?

No. There is no 'right format' for the PS4. Each HDD is married to the machine. You can skip the third drive if you do the PS4 to PS4 via LAN cable. But I have no experience with it. If you value your game saves, learn from the lesson I learned. Make a separate copy yourself prior to the backup.

No you have to do a backup then install the new HDD, install the firmware and initialize the new HDD via a USB flash drive or similar in safe mode, then restore to the new HDD once the console is back up and running again.

The firmware you need is here https://www.playstation.com/en-us/support/system-updates/ps4/#newinstallation
