Current setup:
Campus LAN -> Switch -> 2x Desktop + 2x laptop (IPs from campus DHCP)
all are 100Mbps

Preferred:
Campus LAN -> something to get my home lan 1Gbps-> 2x Desktop + 2x laptop (IPs from campus DHCP)

doable in around 100 bucks?

Unless I'm not understanding your question, all you have to do is replace the current switch with a gigabit switch. You can pick up a 5 or 8 port for well under $100

Umm yes sorry about being vague.

The campus LAN is 100Mbps and i cant change that. The other end of the network jack in the wall is 100Mbps so would a switch work if the WAN port was only 100Mbps?

Only offering DHCP service to the network is forbidden, and everyone is using switches to share the pipe coming to the room. I guess routers are ok too if you disable the DHCP server on it first. My 100Mbit switch has worked like a charm, but its getting slow if i want to move huge files from my laptop to the server or desktop. I got the old switch for free so thats the only reason ive been using it.

Worked fine so far.
