Got a new propane grill for Christmas and it came with a new tank. Now how do I get rid of the old tank? No flammable items are allowed in the trash pickup, and I want to do it by the book. I feel certain many of you have dealt with this in the past, but our old grill lasted 13 years and we haven't run into this before.

Most of the stores here will take the empty propane tanks back when you buy a new one.

Edit: Usually here you pay a deposit if you don't bring an old tank back. So if you bring your own tank, you won't have to pay this deposit on the tank.

Take it to one of the "trade tanks" places that you just switch tanks to get a refill. You get an extra propane bottle to have around and get rid of the old one. Great system.

The trading idea sounds good, but I don't want a second tank around. IIRC, they charge more for trading an empty tank for a full one than it costs to have the tank filled outright at a place that does it. I'm not complaining about that, because it is more convenient. I think I'll just take the old tank to one of those places that offers trades, and let them keep it, if they're OK with that.

Make sure you empty out the gas as much as possible without going to the trouble of taking it to be purged.

Then scrape as much of the paint off as you can. Then sit it on the back porch or in the yard, somewhere that it can get wet and sit in the sun too. Let it rust away. :-D

I keep an extra tank in the back yard. You don't want to run outa gas in the middle of a thick steak.

If you're going from regular tank to a Webber tank then buy the $4.00 adapter and you're golden.

If you really want to get rid of it (It sounds like it's pretty old) just ask the guys that fill it up for you where to dump it.

If it's empty you can throw it out with your trash. My father got rid of a big old tank this way. He made an adaptor to connect it to the gas grill and used up all the gas cooking steaks. After it was completely empty, he took the valve assembly completely off and put it out with the trash. They took it away, as it was clearly empty.

You can make a kit to use it for compressed air. This way you will have an extra air tank for your mower, bicycle, motorcycle, or auto.
