How to dispose of old media?

Up until now I just used a ?media format tool? aka the hammer to do my dirty work and destroy old drives and tapes. My boss has been on me to document a procedure for disposal of old/bad storage devices. My question is, are there other/better alternatives to my method? I know some companies specialize in destroying old stuff and the quotes I?ve seen look expensive. The hammer also doesn?t fair to well on the magnetic backup tapes. They are a bitch to destroy. Thanks:beer:

Thermite, or burn the tapes.

no open fires allowed here. thought about using it for target practice, but that wouldn't look professional on a corporate document. I can see it now....
SPP1 - Disposal of corporate media. The weird drunken IT guy takes the sh!t to the mountain and blows it up with automatic assault rifles.😉

LOL. You just have to know how to word it better.

rofl...😀

You could always try to convince your boss to buy a cheap blender for the tapes. Take the drive apart, throw it in the blender with some water (so it doesn't catch fire), and document it as "destroyed with a motorized chopping device." 😉
