So I purchased Half-Life 2 like many of you, and like many of you, I am growing increasingly frustrated by the whole STEAM interface.

The computer I game on is not connected to a dedicated network...I had to move my computer into another room just to access a cable outlet and install Steam...needless to say, I am not going to play apartment LAN party shuffle every time I want to play HL2.

I found instructions on the Valve website for disabling STEAM such that you can play HL2 offline...problem is that those instructions are crpytic and I have been unable to play HL2 offline.

Anyone care to post detailed instructions on how to disable STEAM.

Well, I had never dealt with this until a couple days ago. Cable went out and I wanted to play some hl2. It tried to connect to steam but obviously failed. It asks if you want to play in offline mode. I didn't have any issues. As long as your login is saved on the computer, offline mode should work. I haven't done anything special to do it.

That's odd because whenever I try to start up a game, it attempts to login to STEAM and just hangs...the longest I have let it run is about 10 minutes before giving up...so apparently STEAM is slow and cumbersome even when offline?
