How to disable my touchpad"tap = left-click"?

I have a Sony R505 "SuperSlim" laptop running Windows XP.

I normally use a USB mouse with this laptop, so the touchpad is rarely used. When I'm typing, occasionally my thumb touches the touchpad and "left-clicks" in my document, placing the cursor somewhere else on the screen.

This seems to be a "feature" of Windows XP... 🙁

Is there any way to disable it? Thanks!

I don't think it is a Windows XP feature. Every laptop I've seen with a touch pad does that and the OS doesn't matter (DOS through XP). I've never found a way to disable it (I actually really like that feature). I guess you could check the BIOS.

Dell had some drivers available for download for the Synaptics touchpads they use on their notebooks. I believe it had the option to disable that feature. These drivers were not included with the oEM software and were a separate download from their web site.

Maybe Sony has something similar or if you can figure out what model touchpad you have, there may be some reference drivers for it.

Check in your CMOS BIOS settings - the touchpad should be able to be completely turned off. When I plug in a PS/2 mouse into my past 3 laptops, it auto disables the touchpad. That is one of the BIOS choices.

Touchpads generally are a PITA - it's hard to type without moving/touching them. I always use a small PS/2 mouse with my laptop. I love the tiny Atek optical PS/2 mouse.
