How to disable Luna in classic logon?

cool

Senior member
I've messed around in the registry (HKEY_USERS\.DEFAULT\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\ThemeManager) but I wasn't able to force XP to use the Windows-classic style on the logon window. Looks like XP loads Luna even if you don't use it! 🙁
Anybody knows a way around? I tried also gpedit.msc but I haven't found any option.

Control Panel>User Accounts>Change the Way Users Log On or Off>Uncheck "Use the Welcome Screen">Apply Options

😉

that's not what i'm referring to. if you turn that off, and log on the classic way it still applies the luna colors after it displays the logon box (user/pass), like an overlay.

I got it working!
go to "HKEY_USERS\.DEFAULT\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\ThemeManager" and change ThemeActive to 0. So no more Luna but the Luna classic colors. If you want to change 'em + the size of the title bar. then change em directly in HKEY_USERS\.DEFAULT\ControlPanel\Colors and HKEY_USERS\.DEFAULT\ControlPanel\Desktop\WindowMetrics.
But there's an easier way:
I just exported my personal settings from, HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\*** into e *.reg-file. Then I changed all references to HKEY_USERS\.DEFAULT\ControlPanel\***, where *** are the subdirectories. Then import it. That's it! Finally, no more Luna! Nice side effect: XP starts a tad faster...

most excellent. if you export the two keys you need, then edit them and change the path to the hkey_users\.default\etc path then you can import them instead of having to retype all those keys.

thanks for the find,
