i just removed and reinstall some components from my pc and ever since then the windows login now appears and i have to click it to log into windows.

how do i disable it so i don't have to click it ever time?

how does it pose security risk?

do i really have to go though all that inorder auto login? it wasn't like that before and i didnt modify anything.

It's a security risk because with autologin, anyone can just turn on your computer and use your account. Not much of a problem if you live by yourself, but potentially a big problem if you've got a roommate, and you keep financial data on the computer.

start -> run -> control userpasswords2

Uncheck "Users must enter a user name and passwords to use this computer".

I believe there's a Windows Update that causes this to happen - something to do with .NET??? I'm pretty sure the latest update fixes this though. Doesn't hurt knowing the 'controluserpasswords2' method that Zugzwang152 mentioned though.

Yeah, sounds like the .Net 1.1 installation, which created the ASPNET account...

The Welcome to Windows screen appears when you start Windows XP after you install the .NET Framework 1.1

Just go to Windows Update and get the .Net 1.1 Service Pack 1, that should fix it.

I just opened the control panel, went to the 'user accounts' section, and deleted the ASPNET account. Once that's gone, windows will just boot to the desktop again.

You probably should, there's been a lot of updates recently.
