how to disable built in mics in laptop

Hi...
I have a dell d600 and I want to disable the built in microphone; ive googled up this query and the only thing i could find was entering some values in the registry, but that didn't work...any ideas? txs
 
Would you be satisfied to just turn it off, rather than a registry hack?

Control Panel \ Sounds & Audio Devices \ Voice \ Volume \ slider to "off" position
