How to Disable Autorun on CDrom in Windows 2000?

What is the easiest way to Disable Autorun on the CD-rom drive in windows 2000 Server?

I'd also like to hear anybody's suggestions (and I know I can stop the autorun with the shift key). I also don't want it to do it period!

If you're comfortable editing your registry, simple enter the following commands into the following registry path:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\CDRom

Create a new DWORD named Autorun then simply set it to either 1 or 0, 1 meaning enabled, 0 meaning disabled. Though this will disable the autorun on all your cd drives.

Hrmm...yeah that's the only way i know how, in 98 it was much easier.

I agree with Tharyn but unfortunately this is a global setting that covers autorun on all CD drives installed. W98 was CD selective. I have a DVD, Plextor Burner, and Plextor Writer. I don't have any use for autorun, preferring to control things myself, but Adaptec DirectCD practically demands autorun be enabled on the CD burner it uses. I still turn autorun off in W2K as described above, ignoring Adaptec's pop up warnings, but now am very, very careful how I remove and replace DirectCD disks.

This setting as well as many other tweaks can be modified with the General Policy Editor, gpedit.msc. However, I believe AIN is applied to all drives using this method as well. Most regedit values which can be applied to Win9x work in WinNT as well, so if you want, you can use a regedit snoop like ArkoSoft's System Snapshot or Epsilon Squared's InstallWatch to monitor which key/value Win9x's Device Manager modifies. Then you can manually insert the key into Win2k.

To disable AutoPlay

1.. Double-click My Computer.
2.. On the Tools menu, click Folder Options, and then click the File
Types tab.
3.. In Registered file types, click AudioCD, and then click Advanced.
4.. In Actions, click Play, and then click Set Default.

Note:
a.. You can temporarily disable AutoPlay by pressing SHIFT while you
insert an audio CD.
b.. Repeating steps 1 through 4 enables AutoPlay.
c.. When Play is displayed in bold, AutoPlay is enabled. When Play is
not displayed in bold, AutoPlay is disabled.

Unfortunately what do you do with data CD's (example - Windows install CD's) that insist on running (autorun) when inserted (again, I know about the shift key). I am really not interested in any kind of "automatic" stuff. I just want the CD drive to be treated as any other disk drive, nothing special, and individually controllable like in W98. I guess I want an "automatic" shift key that the system thinks is pressed whenever I insert ANY kind of CD. I will look at the CD contents and decide what to do. This might be a hell of a way for viruses or other kind of adverse programs to be launched if you inadvertently insert a "trusted" CD.
