I posted in Operating Systems, but not a nibble. Any teammates have an idea? (Didn't think to mention it in the original thread, but these are NT 4 machines). TIA.

Start RegEdit;navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\control\Update.
Double-click UpdateMode in the right pane and change the
value from 00 to 01 then Click OK, close RegEdit
(choose Registry, Exit), and restart the computer.

Why do you want to disable refresh?

Thanks for the reply. I'm looking into your suggestion, but I'm going to have to research a little more since Microsoft TechNet says that particular registry key is for controlling policy editor updates (and yet I found quite a few web sites that agree with you).

Our problem is that we have multiple people working in the same large directory. They frequently have to rename files. They may right-click a file and select Rename, start editing the file name, and while they are in the act of renaming the file, the directory contents will refresh and that kicks them out of the rename operation. Disabling the automatic refresh will fix that, I hope.
