How to diagnose a SSD?

I have a OCZ Vertex SSD that I suspect to be dying, or dead. It currently runs WHS, but I cant do anything with it (unstability issues). The drive sometimes is not detected, and now a whole partition has gone missing on it. I am suspecting some kind of hardware problem with it. Is there a way to diagnose a bad SSD?

To my knowledge, none of the SSD mfgs have released in-depth diagnostic tools for SSDs, like they have for HDs.

The best that you could do (if this is a Vertex 1), is to do a secure erase and/or destructive flash. That will reset the drive.

I suspect some kind of hardware failure, but the last thing I want to do it to reset the drive and reinstate it as a system drive after that kind of failure.

Likely to do with some power transitions(even voltage fluctuations can knock them out) and the mapping or firmware has become corrupted. Destructive flashes can help to reset the base code and thereby increase stability. Newest firmware(or anything past revision 1.5) is also a must.

Personally, I would never run any install for much more than about 1 year. Destructive flashes and imaging software just has too many benefits to overlook from a data integrity standpoint.
