Question How to determine if USB cable is USB 3.0 or 3.1? Is there an app via Android that let you determine if the cable is USB 3.0 or 3.1?

There's no difference.

Are you talking about a USB 3.2 Gen 2 cable? I don't know that there is any externally-visible difference.

A Type-C cable obviously has a different connector on the device end.

Btw, ALL of these are equal (They are all marketing terms for the SAME THING):
USB 3.0
USB 3.1
USB 3.1 Gen1
USB 3.2
USB 3.2 Gen1

Hi VirtualLarry, thank you for the reply, sorry for not being clear, what I mean is is there a way for you to identify if your USB cable (specifically USB A to Type-C cable) is USB 3.0 or USB 2.0 via an app on a phone? i.e. you connect the USB-A cable on your laptop or desktop and then connect the type-C end to an Android phone, then an app will tell you if the cable is USB 3.0 or USB 2.0.

I have tried this but the device I used is an Oculus Quest. Oculus Quest VR headset can be used as a PCVR headset and it initially required a USB cable that is USB 3.0 compatible, eventually it can run on a USB 2.0. The Rift app on the desktop can tell you if the cable you plugged in is USB 3.0 or USB 2.0.

Look at the diagram half way down that page AnitaPeterson linked above. When you peek inside a USB2 Type A connector it has four wire strips at the front edge. A USB3 (whichever)Type A has those same four PLUS five additional contacts behind those.

The names have changed to confuse the innocent. NOW, ALL USB3 systems are called USB3.2, Gen (a number). Gen 1 is the original USB3 that can do data transfers at 5 Gbps. Gen 2 can do 10 Gbps. The latest is Gen 2x2 that can do 20 Gbps. The all use the same cables, although it is MUCH preferred that one uses cables with the new Type C connectors, not the Type A. Type C is a better connection and can do the fastest speeds.
