A program called sisoft sandra should be able to detect it. Is it a commercially built system like gateway, dell, etc? http://www.crucial.com/ Use their memory selector if it is commercial and it will say what type and size of memory the computer will accept.

Sisoft Sandra works well. I believe there are tons of other programs that will do the same though. Sandra will tell you a lot about your computer.

You could also try the Belarc Advisor. I've suggested it to folks before with great success in identifying mobos, sound card, vid cards, etc. I've never actually used it, though ( 😱 ) so I don't know exactly what info it gives you. And it's only a 600K d/l.
