how to detect fps counts

well CS definately does not have any kind of timedemo implementation and I dont thing RTCW has a timedemo... You could use the drawfps command but it's useless for comparison.

In Q3 ~ key to bring down console then type:
timedemo 1 (enter)
demo demo001 (enter)
demo demo002(enter)
the last two lines will start demo 1 or 2
have fun!

Oh I almost forgot then hit the ~ key and it will tell you frames drawn in so many seconds and frames per second!

i don't have quake3 yet. i'll try to get it by the end of the year. i'll take note on those timedemos. thanks.

yes i have a stopwatch. why?

117.5fps in timedeom001 with everything to the highest including trilinear filtering at 32bit. Is this okie?? I'm running it at 800x600 on a ti200 230/520 with quicunx on.

Pillage with a PIII@1000 Radeon 8500 Soundblaster live in demo 1 109fps with sound on 123 with soundcard disabled in device manager. In demo2 104 with sound and 117 with it disabled,so your numbers seem to be pretty reasonable.BTW all settings maxed out and Smoothvision at 2x.

in counterstrike, press ~ to get console, tehn type net_graph 3 to open it, type net_graph 0 to close it. if no console by pressing ~. open the shortcut properties, and change the target to "C:\blahblahblah\hl.exe" -console
add the -console, and try it

You can always use the Fraps utility to check the frame rate in any DirectX game irregardless of whether the game has a built in utility to check the frame rates.
Just do a search at virtually any search engine for "fraps". It's quite a handy little proggy.
