How to destroy this forum.

There seems to be a certain element present on all internet forum boards. These are people who are obsessed with other people. They exist everywhere, in all walks of life. They are obsessed with controlling other people.

Some years ago Windrivers forum was very big. The people obsessed with controlling other people destroyed it. Now it barely has any traffic. The reason is some people decided they wanted to stop other people from making political, funny, satirical, nef, etc, posts. They would post in every one of these threads, usually just to say stop posting. Eventually they started complaining to the mods. The mods worked under the reasoning that if enough people complain about a user, type of thread, etc, it was in their best interest to sanction the posters of these threads. Too late they realized the complainers were the problem. Eventually posters decided to stop posting because they got temp banned or their threads locked or had to defend themselves to the mods. And the board got boring as hell.

Threads turned into "Whats your favorite color" "Should I have bologna or salami for lunch?" In just a few months there was very few people left in that forum.

I don't know what term best describes these people. They are the type of person who seem more preoccupied with what other people do, than what they themselves do. They are incensed when someone doesn't do what they tell them to do. And will go to almost any lengths to try and get the kind of behaviour they demand out of that person.

On internet boards they are death.

These busybodies always seem to read and post in these threads that they hate. In effect, they bump them and cause even more posts in them. Ignoring a thread is inconcievable to them. That alone is a clue to their nature.

Now, I personally have complained about one post in my years here (maybe it was two but the first was so long ago I can't remember it). My complaint was about overt racism in a thread. Yes, I believe there are some kinds of threads that need banning, and some people too.

However, when someone new (who shall remain nameless) joined fairly recently and started posting like crazy, I was not "offended". I was disappointed that their trolls were bad. "Blue or Green-discuss" type posts. Yet, I couldn't care a rats behind that they were making these posts. If I didn't want to read them I didn't have to. Yet, their posts turned into quite humorous threads as people creatively lambasted this turkey.

Internet boards, imo, such as this one, is served by people who find the threads and posts interesting enough to read and post in. They say in Hollywood there is no bad publicity. Well, in this forum thats mostly true. Everything that gets and keeps people reading and posting is good. The only drawback is allowing things that are too hateful. For example if you allowed racist posts on a regular basis you end up drawing racists to your board. Then you fundamentally change the board.

Alright, rant over.

Well making a thread title with a homophobic slur will not win you many fans in that latest one you made.

You even admitted to using it to draw more posters to it to get more posts in it.

Sorry to burst your bubble of gloom and doom, but the derailing of stupid threads with nonsense about waffles or some similarly critical subject has been happening for a lot than longer a few months, and yet OT still sees over a thousand simultaneous viewers at various points each day.

Also, the moderators don't seem to be banning people for being shockingly stupid, transparently trolling, or universally unliked. If that were true, there is a long list of posters who would already be gone, but they are not.

We need Off Topic Tech and an Off Topic Social forums.
Let people nef in the social forum and drop the ban hammer in the tech forum if they do.

But, eventually, there will be so much crap posted in the social forum that it will become a huge, steaming pile of shlt. Then it will carry over to the tech forum.

I can see it now, Techs arguing that: "What's Your Favorite Color" is actually a tech topic because it deals with eyesight and perception.

And BTW, for the last 3 years this place has been a shell of it's former self.

most tech forums went to shit because microsoft actually took care of computer problems from xp sp2 and onward. there isnt much to discuss anymore, besides the incremental releases of shitty hardware and lackluster software. i do also agree that mods can do harm by over-controlling, but at the same time this is a tech forum and anything outside of tech discussion shouldnt really be here. anandtech and others have "social" sections because they need to bring their member count up so the advertisers are happy, but you cant expect niche forums to draw as many as say yahoo forums, which cover anything.

Good post. The unbanning of a lot of users a while back was probably because traffic slowed.

the social forums were created to keep the "social" topics out of the hardware areas. when you have a forum that grows like this one did, you're bound to get some overspill. unfortunately the overspill seems to have taken over the main focus of the forums.

OP needs to stop posting. I've informed every mod about this.
Also, what is everyones favorite color for bologna/salami for lunch?

PFI is for serious discussion. Trolling in here is now met with infractions and vacations.

Take a few days off

I agree with the above poster who pointed out that because modern stuff is so easy to use, many technical forums arent as useful as they used to be. People dont really need to ask too many questions or engage in really deep debates as much as the old days.

The main reasons we have debates is cuz folks need to vent their rage on a stranger and an argument over ATI vs Nvidia is acceptable (to a point) on these forums. Most of our discussions are repeating the same old things.

In fact I think I've seen progressively more OT activity every year that I've been a member. The tech areas just arent as necessary or well traveled.

I Wonder who he meant... :hmm:

Aside from that, I don't believe that posting, asking legitimate questions to provoke discussions on interesting subjects is a problem, if anything I believe it is what forums are meant for. There are "Blue or Green - discuss" type threads occasionally but they die very quickly, the ones that stick around have some interested subject matter.
