Is there a way to limit what my wife can do? Such as, downloads, installs, access to tools like defragmenter, etc?
Windows 2000 Pro.

I want her to be able to surf and install the games she wants, but she sits around playing with defragmenter, Ad Aware, etc, and screws up some of the settings I have.

Might try this:

1) create a separate Administrator-class account named Maintenance

2) take Defrag as an example. Find the executable, right-click it, and remove all permissions by anyone, then add back the Maintenance account only.

3) right-click Defrag's shortcut while holding down the Shift key, and choose Run As.... Use the Maintenance account's credentials.

That any help? Or get her a computer of her own maybe :)

Dont let her install games; do the installing for her and make her account user only.

I dont know how savvy your wife is; but if she is anything like mine she'll get tired of having to get it fixed and want you to "just make it work" ;)

Besides, we're both a lot more comfortable with her doing things like credit card or bank transactions with the knowledge that it is really hard for her to screw things up.

What I've done so far: Moved her username from being an Administrator to a User. Then I went into the properties for C and denied everything.
Under her login you can't even explore C now.
Ad Aware she can still run, but since it's in C, I can't even delete the desktop icon that shows on her login.

I'd really love to just deny access to a few programs, and she can do whatever she wants to the others. I'll try your suggestion.

Well I suppose (so long as she has user rights) you could use a GPO to stop her from using them....

On the other hand if all you're talking about is a couple of programs why not just ask her not to use them?

Right. Maybe you can ask her.

By "user" do you mean "Standard User" (still can install stuff) or "Restricted User" (cannot install, cannot do admin stuff)? If you're going to leave her with the power to install, then this is not going to be teh easy :p

I can't even delete the desktop icon that shows on her login.
Sure you can, look in C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Desktop. Programs that drop an omnipresent desktop icon, that's where you're going to find it.

I don't care if she notices after I've done it....it's too late then, and she won't know how to change it.
Seems to be working okay so far....she hasn't noticed yet.
