I'm using media player class for all my media files and was wondering if there was any way to completely remove windows media player (such as the run command to get rid of msn messenger).

you know 'add or remove programs'

Well there are categories to the left, it defaults to the first one.

Click on the third one called 'Add or Remove Windows Components'.

Simply Uncheck windows media player and keep hitting next.

Cluelis: That's what I was afraid of...

kapster: I already did that...but I wanted to remove it completely, not just have Windows hide it.

i never really understood the need to remove such components. if you don't use it, it's not going to do anything. i know that's not true of msn messenger, but i've never known windows media player to fire up when i didn't want it to. i could be wrong. anyone know if it fires up on its own?

Well, to me it's just junk on my computer that I could do without. The problem isn't it starting up randomly, it's that it's taking up space when I don't want it to take up space. People get mad when spyware is installed on their computers without their permission (or even with their permission). I just happen to get mad when software won't let me get rid of it.

ditto!

Is it just me or is that always the line given by linux users. While I like linux well enough, telling me to just ditch windows because of this is like telling me to trade in a perfectly good BMW because I don't like the cup holder and switch to a Mercedes (very loose analogy). Keeping with the car theme, your comment is about as helpful as a car modder telling you to buy that Mercedes when you asked him the solution to the crappy cup holder. That is to say, not very helpful at all.

the real answer is don't install WMP9 , or have system restore enabled 'next time' 🙁 personally I won't install it, as doesn't it introduce DRM to your system? sure it doesn't "do" anything...yet.
