How to delete Windows 7 network?

How can someone delete a network in Windows 7? I tried uninstalling the adapter associated with it, but when it reinstalled, the exact same network appeared again.

A strange problem I'm having (supporting someone else) is when the adapter is connected directly to the cable modem, the computer's firewall tests perfectly. But when connected to a router in between, the network has a different identity and the firewall fails, revealing most ports 'closed' instead of hidden (grc shields up.)

When the computer is connected to the cable modem, the network comes up as 'connection 2' but when connected to the router, the network displays as 'connection 4', which I'd like to delete references to. However the right-click options have "delete" greyed out.

I don't know how to rest your "connection counter" or whatever it's called, but honestly, what does it matter if it's connection 4 or connection 2?

The fact that your ports show up closed once you plug it into the router is only normal, that's what the router is there for, you don't want open ports unless you're using them. If some of the ports that you need are closed, you have to go into your router config page and open them, otherwise, leave them closed. Of course you could set up your computer in a DMZ, but that's not recommended.

It's less to do with the actual connection number, than the network configuration associated with that number. Windows doesn't seem to forget this even when the adapter is uninstalled.

Closed is better than open of course, but I'd like them to be 'hidden' from the outside world and not respond to solicitations at all. For some reason, when the computer is connected to the router, connected to the cable modem, most everything is only 'closed'. But with computer connected directly to the cable modem, all ports are 'hidden', the way I'd like it to be while using the router. I'm concerned it might be the way the network was established (which was done before I looked at the computer.)
