I suck at office politics, and quit my job and will be doing commission sales again because you basically don't have a boss.. Anyways, my wife's more traditional and is working under a personality type I routinely butt heads with, but I never know how to deal with (the situations ALWAYS blow up):
Some of her.. er.. their.. traits:
- Middle aged
- Middle management
- Single, other than the cats
- Makes decisions based on rules, policies, her period, or her prerogative - but rarely reason
- When you disagree she will put a bulls eye on you to take you down, from slander to stupid assignments out of nowhere
I'll bullet point my wife's solution, keep in mind my own advice would always make things worse:
- She just started teaching at a charter/private school. She was hoping to escape the board of ed's b.s., unfortunately she reports to an old school (50s) former public school a.p. who still goes by that book.
- my wife was first given an assignment on the end of day on a friday that had to be delivered back that friday, by midnight. my thought was "who's checkign her email for an evaluation report that's due next month. She's testing you, whip sound.. ON A FRIDAY, YOU SHOULD BE WATCHING THOR WITHOUT DISTRACTION!".. Anyways, felt like the sort of test my prior managers with this personality type would do. Such as changing some insignificant banner at at 7:30 pm on fathers day which was on a weekend. It could of waited.
- my wife was recently given a bunch of cases to handle, extra work she's happy to do. but there's the logistical thing about having to carry around all these case files (she's a roving special ed teacher). Again, she doesn't mind, but she noticed there were 5 teachers and 3 desks and she'd have no where to put confidential files. She asked for a desk and this individual reemed here about policy, how teachers MUST share desks.. then she sent a passive aggressive email to all the teachers about sharing desk space. The issue could easily have been resolved since the room is huge and there's plenty of extra furniture around - she's just sticking to the rule book and trying to fuck with my wife...
So what to do in this situation. I've called them on it and, every time, I was looking for a new job within 6 months. always sets off a horrible domino effect
