One thing you can do yourself is walk around finding out how things like mice are getting inside. Use things like steel wool to fill holes and look around the eaves and roof line where squirrels can get in. Mice only need a hole about the size of a 50 cent coin to get inside. That is all stuff you can do yourself.
If you got a mouse in the house, it got in somewhere, unless you are bringing them home with you
