How to deal with past work aholes?

I worked at a company but I left a year ago on not-so-good terms. I was very relieved to leave and wanted to never look back on it again. However, I am currently going through a standard background check but I was never in the company system (long story). To make the verification, I need to provide contact info of HR, former manager, etc., but HR is unable to and my former managers seem to be ignoring the request or saying that they "can't verify".

When I got those responses, I was a little pissed. I hate the people in that city, the way they act, and it was a negative experience all around that I was really hoping not to revisit. Any tips on how to best proceed from here?

You have old paycheck stubs or tax statements showing they paid you?

Sometimes employers get so gunshy of litigation that they refuse to do even simple things like verify past employment.
