How to deal with internet car sales staff?

After looking online, I'v decided to go the internet sales route. I want to contact a handful of local dealers this upcoming week and I'm not sure on how I should go about it?

Do people email the dealership with their offer for the car and wait for a yes/no response for the dealers or should I just ask them for a quote and start negotiating?
