I have about 2 feet of excess headphone wire - I saw a site a few weeks ago that explained how to tie it into a 'ball' that wouldn't come loose or snag on anything.. I can't for the life of me find it again - anyone know what I'm talking about?

When faced with these situations, I wrap the excess around three fingers and use a zip tie to tie it into a neat bow. No more problems.

Something like "tie it into a ball" sounds kinda permanent and potentially damaging.

A zip tie is too bulky, the 'lock' would get caught on my pockets.. I currently have a piece of velcro wire tie holding it together.

Ooooo... the monkey fist... such a sweet knot. We used to make those out of pinky sized rope and beat each other with them when I was in the Corps =p
