How to De-Certify Current Union and bring in a new one??

Serious question for those that may know.

This is very rare in the world of unions.

My current workplace has a union... AFSCME councel 25 located in Detroit Mi.
Although my local is pretty cool ( local 207 ) and semi stong.. it doesnt mean jack because
our local councel is firmly in bed with the mayor.

Councel 25 is made up of many locals representing many different locations... pretty much
most government employees in Michigan.

My local voted AGAINST our current contract by about 98%.. pretty strong numbers... yet the contract was approved because we have many locals in our group.
The councel will NOT provide the numbers for all the different locals... we honestly feel
the vote was fudged.
While we may not be the only ones we are for sure the largest group.... and we know for sure most of the largest groups also voted against the contract.

The president of councel 25 is a wimp and complete sell out... we have been trying to get rid of him for years.
Name is Al Garret.

We are all pretty certain that he is on the mayors payroll.

Now.... nobody has the resources to get 90% plus votes from every city union member..
damn near impossable... over 1,000 employees just at my location alone.

I work at the wastewater plant.... what we want is out OWN union local ( not AFSCME )
seperate from the rest of the city... although we may want maintanance to join with us.

I have been researcing this for over 6 months now.... Teamsters will not TOUCH us...
thats because they still live by mob rules and will not take a local from AFSCME or anyone else.

We now have a shot at becoming UAW... but not sure on that yet.

I am still waiting to speak with UAW union officials. Anyone ever do something like this before??

Any advice??

Its gonna be a rough road.. but worth it.

Peace
Rich

All I gotta say is good luck, you're going to need it. No union is going to touch this. Probably the best you can hope for is to get a labor attorney who represents the members of your local, not AFSCME, and get some legal advice. This kind of thing is NOT a minor undertaking.

I was a member of an AFSCME local in Flint for a few years. We had very similar problems. A petition was passed to protest a number of issues and nearly 60% of the local members signed it. The AFSCME region council or whatever said 'we'll get right on this, this is your union and we're here to serve you'. You know, standard union mantra. Nothing was ever addressed.

Of course, the head of our bargaining unit was also the Vice President of AFSCME so there was this well-protected and entrenched power structure from Flint to Washington DC. He has since died, but I'm sure one of his hand-picked underlings ascended to his thrown.
