How to cut your own hair

How do people trim the back of their hair? I tried last night and the sides came out perfect, but I couldn't do the back very well. Any tips on mirror angles and how to hold the trimmer so that I can see what I'm doing?

Also, should I be going up and down or side to side?

I just use clippers. One setting all over then go to the next shortest guard to trim back and sides. I use a hand mirror and the bathroom mirror to see what I'm doing.

Edit- you want to go against the grain of the hair to get everything even. This usually means going at the crown of your head from a few angles as the hair grows every direction up there usually. Hold the mirror in front of you, slightly above eye level and to one side so you can see what you're doing.

oooh, the hostility, im not sure how to cut it yourself, just have a friend help you out on the trimming...i wouldnt attempt to CUT my hair by myself tho...

Ok, so what you do is go side to side around the head with a longer guard near the top, and then shorter ones as you go lower? And then I guess you would clean up the rest?

I too have had the same trouble. But a few weeks ago, my uncle told me he does the same and has a nice solution. He has this mirror that attached to the wall, and then the arm extends out. So you have this mirror behind you and a regular mirror in front of you. This leaves both hands free, and is much easier to do than holding a hand miror behind your head.

I tried it once before I had to move out and I was satisfied. We both have the same mirror and got it from IKEA.
