How to create: subdomains

Say I have a top-level domain name, and I want to make subdomain extensions. Do I need to register it like I did my regular domain? Or is there another (cheaper) way to do this? And would I need to setup another account with my hosting company to add web pages and such to it?

Anyone have experience with subdomains?

It is an entry in the Zone file maintained at the DNS server of record. Not sure if it's a CNAME or A entry, though.

Scrapster,

It is a CNAME entry. I just created one for one of mine in order to test it. With the registrar I use, you can manage the zone file yourself.

Is the only way to edit CNAME through your registrar? Dotster wants to charge me $10 if I want to edit my own CNAME file. I'd like to avoid this charge. I'm hosted through hypermart.com, I'm wondering if they would do it for me. Or even better, is there a script I could use that can do this? I know some websites, especially web page hosts, will automatically give you a subdomain (off their domain) when you signup for their service. Yet, I have no idea how they do it.

Yep, ZoneEdit is fabulous. I still have a couple with them, but register.com recently added zone file management, so life is even easier.

Shux,

Not compucheap.com. That was registered back when those dickwads NS were the only game in town. Which reminds me, I need to transfer that and the other I have thru them out of their inept hands.
