How to Create a Password Protected Folder on Mac OS X

This is a very important featured provided by the Mac to the users. Documents, files, and folders with confidential information need to be protected and requires access from only authenticated people. You can ensure this by creating the password for the confidential file or folder. By doing this, only people who know the passwords for the files or folders can view and access it. Here is how you create a password protected folder on Mac.

Step 1
Select ‘Disk Utility’

First, click on the 'Spotlight' find button as shown below. Here, type Disk Utility. You can then click on the ‘Disk Utility’ option from the search results.

Step 2
Select ‘Disk Image From Folder’

Now, select the ‘File’ menu option from the available menu options. Click ‘New’ option and then ‘Disk Image from Folder’ option as shown below.

Step 3
Select ‘Image’

Now locate to the path and choose the ‘Folder’. After choosing the folder to be protected, click on the ‘Image’ option as shown below.

Select ‘Encryption’

Now, you can rename the folder, add the tags and choose the image format as well. You should then click on the Encryption method. Here ‘128-bit AES encryption (recommended)’ option is chosen as shown below.

Step 5
Enter the ‘Password’

In the next dialog box, you will have to enter the ‘Password’ and verify it as shown below. This will be your encryption password to access and open the specific folder.

Step 6
Select ‘OK’

Now, you can uncheck the box for ‘Remember Password in my Keychain’ option. After this, select the ‘OK’ option in the dialog box.

Step 7
Enter the 'Assigned Password’

Double click on the folder to which the password was set. You will then find that a dialog box appears asking you to enter the assigned password. Enter the password and click on the ‘OK’ option to access and view the folder that is password protected.

You can thus easily create a password-protected folder on your Mac OS X system.
