Hey all..

Sorry did some serious research on this... how do folks create these amazing MKV files with such great quality (sound and video)? I don't even need to do this for Blue Ray/HD disks... I just want to rip my current DVD movies to MKV. Are there apps that can do this from an ISO file or from a DVD in my DVR-RW?

Don't know much about mkv but you can try avsforum. I even got you started with a thread with some info.
I haven't had experience with mkv but I used imtoo for dvd rips (.avi) in the past with success. Took forever (5-6x movie length on a athlon xp 3200) so I had to leave it on overnight. After a couple of tries, I got near dvd quality for 670MB, so not too far off the 700MB you often see.

try automkv or autogk. Also, I find it is faster to do encoding from an iso, but both programs can do from iso (mount it in a virtual drive using something like Alcohol 120%), or direct from dvd. So, I use DVDDecrypter, and AutoGK, with Alcohol to handle virtual drives.

Well, I gave autoMKV a try on a HD episode of Lost and the output size was twice the size of the original file! Started with a 3.5G file and ended up with a 8G MKV file. So obviously I have the settings wrong. Any suggestions for settings to convert HDTV files (mpeg2) to MKV and actually reduce the size?
