How do you create a Restore CD? I found several tricks how to get this done. The best so (cheap) far is using the Nero 5.5 demo. I added partition magic to adjust the partion so I wouldn't need 50 CD-R or RWs. However, partition magic 6.x doesn't support XP. Does anyone have a work-around for this solution or another that will work with XP?

Thanks!

Hey sep,

Did you find a walkthru for creating your own restore cd. I've got a GF that I'd like to make one for, and maybe for myself. Got DI, PM, and Nero. I'd really like to set her up with a cd so she could get back to her original setup.....that I set her up with. :)

Might be silly question but why not use ghost? The instrtuctions at techtv involves several cdr or cdrw and you still need a boot disk.

In ghost you can image a partition or a hardrive and than burn it into a cdr or cdrw with compression. and restore using a ghost boot disk. The compression is the key here. You can fit 1.6 gb of data in a 1 cdr.
Ghost also only copies the data in a partition so even if your partition is 30 gb if you only have 1.6gb of data on it ghost can fit it in 1 cdr.

1) Use Drive Image to make the images and be sure to check the option to separate them in 690mb (if using 700mb CD) portions.
2) start nero, select bootable CD. Use the option to read boot sector from the floppy drive and put a win98/me bootdisk in the floppy. It does not matter which OS you are using. (If you don't have a floppy drive or don't want to use it, download the appropriate boot image from bootdisk.com and use th option in Nero to use that image for the boot disk.)
3) put your first part of image in the above CD compilation. Also put the files from disk-2 of the Drive image floppy set to the root of the CD.
4) Burn it.
5) Burn rest of the parts the same way, or if you want you can just burn the image files without making it bootable.

This is not an elegant solution but it works and is easy. The mouse won't work for restore but its not a big deal. If you search google for bootable CD, you shuld be able to find one to make the mouse work

Thanks guys. I needed something really easy for her to setup from afar, so when it's mucked up, she can just pop the cd in, and maybe a boot floppy and run with it. I'd forgotten about Nero making it bootable.

AnMig--Yeah, I DI to a second hard drive, and just hide the imaged partition....or make files and send them to another pc or cd-r. I mostly need something that is easy for her to get back to square one.
