OK, I ahve recently decided to turn my old Dell (p3, Radeon 9200SE, 256MB RAM) into a linux box. I downloaded the ubuntu ISO file, and niow I'm stuck. I tried just burning the file (through windows, i don't have any burning software), but that just burned the .iso file, which obviously didn't work.

Do I need some specialized program to burn the image to the CD or an I do it through windows? If I do need software, are there any free ones available (or extremely cheap that I could find locally).

Thanks for the info nd sorry for the n00b question...

You cannot just copy the ISO file onto the CD. You need an ISO burner. You can find a free one if you search for it.

Go to nero.com and get the trial version of Nero 6.. Install it, choose "burn image file", done. Enjoy.

Hmm....guess I've just been lucky that I've allways gotten software with mine.
