How to crack a coconut?

How do you usually crack open a coconut? I mean, with what tool? Nothing comes to mind and I'm afraid of cutting myself in an attempt. Any ideas?

There are the three holes in a triangle at one end- one of them will be soft, poke a hole through it and drain the milk from it. Then just use a good old hammer to crack the shell.

Opening Coconuts:
Open the coconuts by flinging them onto a cement or rock surface (this is how the monkeys do it!) Don't worry about losing the liquid, as it's not the coconut milk called for in cooking. Each coconut should break in 3 to 4 pieces. It is also possible to open a coconut by piercing the eyes of the coconut with a screwdriver or ice pick, draining the liquid through the holes and placing the coconut in a 400 degrees F oven for 20 minutes. Wrap the coconut in a towel and hit it with a hammer to loosen the shell and split it into pieces.

according to the Food Network anyways...

There is a large, shell-less hermit crab (call a coconut crab, ironically) that can climb a palm tree, and open up a coconut with its claw. I'd get one of them to handle all of my coconut cracking needs.

1. obtain some liquid nitrogen.
2. obtain some gloves.
3. submerge coconut in the liquid nitrogen.
4. drop coconut on floor
5. wait until pieces thaw, eat.
