How to cover up used and faded interior front panel?

You see where the silver panel is in the video? My silver panel like that (mazda 2003 tribute) is faded in different areas and especially in the area underneath where the volume control knob is from years and years of touching and use.

I know that I can either replace it or take it out and spray paint it.

Is there a cheaper third option? Can I simply use some tape to cover up the area? I need some ideas of other cheaper alternatives if possible?
