I don't want people to know when and if I've read the emails that they sent me.

How can I tell if they used an "email read notification" on an email they sent me, and how can I read the email without triggering the notification that is sent back to them?

Thanks!

Worried about the legal liabilty of people knowing that you actually did in fact get that business critical memo that you chose to ignore? ;)

You can disable read receipts for POP3 mail accounts with these steps in MS Outlook:

Click on the Tools menu and select Options.
On the Preferences tab click on the E-mail Options... button.
In the E-mail Options window click on the Tracking Options... button.
In the Tracking Options window select the option "Never send a response" or "Ask me before sending a response"
Click OK three times to close the options windows.

Personally, I'd use the "Ask me" option so that you can still send the receipt if you want to but Outlook will prompt you first so that you know it is being sent.

Read receipts are pretty worthless for most intents and purposes, if the person doesnt want you to know that they read your message its not hard to do
