How to copy texts/iMessages from iphone to Mac (or even PC)

So I want to copy some text conversations (including pictures if possible) from iphone to Mac (or PC). I have searched and it seems there are paid apps like iExplorer who do that. Is there a simple, free way to do it?

When I get a new phone I send a text message from my PC using gmail, address is usually full phone number @ whatever the carrier gateway name is. Then the phone can easily send or forward messages to the PC.

If they're iMessages, you can have them sync to a Mac through iCloud. SMS syncs as well, but for obvious reasons it's not as consistent.
