how to copy/swap Hard Drives

i just bought a machine with a 5400rpm 40GB hard drive. WinXP was pre-installed on it along with anti-virus and other applications.

1)i want to replace it with a new 7200rpm 10GB hard drive. i would like to replicate the whole contents of the 40GB HD into the 10GB HD.
how can i do it?

2)and after successful replication, will the BIOS detect the new 10GB hard drive?
will there be any issues when WinXP starts since it was installed in the 40GB HD originally?

get norton ghost, and ghost the entire partition over, there shouldn't be any problems, but may I ask why you are downgrading? (or are you going to keep the 40 gig as a data drive?) if you are goind to keep the 40 gig, after you have ghosted it onto the 10 gig and booted up with only the 10 gig attached to make sure it is functional, I would attach the 40 gig as a slave using the onboard jumpers, then delete all the files on it in windows. post if you need more info.

i'm going to put the 40 gigger in another machine.
will XP detect that it's now sitting on another drive?

I hope you're not going to copy whole 40 Gb to 10 Gb.
Ghost is the best util. for that, use latest version

xp nor your bios will know the difference (other than it being 10gb instead of 40 gb, you shouldn't have any problems.)
