How to copy stuff from RRoD xbox to another?

My Xbox 360 finally died after 6 long years of service. I found a great deal on a used one so bought it but now I'm wondering how to get my Xbox live profile on there?

Most of it I don't care about but I'd love to get my saved games for a couple of titles brought over and all of my DLC for games or songs for Rockband.

Is there an easy way to do this from a RRoD console? I have an external SATA USB connector, can I plug it to a laptop and backup the stuff I want and just copy it to the new drive via the network somehow?

I googled but most sites are blocked as I just sat down at work and the ones I was able to open were not helpful at all...

Thanks

Except your Viva Pinata save won't move over, damn them! :)
Boy was my wife disappointed when she heard that.

Technically, you can just swap the HDDs (being either external or internal). I suppose you could get the dongle if you wanted.

Yeah, but that's only good if he buys an Arcade version. If he picks up the 250GB version he'll obviously want to use the larger hard drive.

True, it does depend on the HDD size he already has. I have a 250GB already, so if I was to upgrade to the new Xbox (which I am debating on doing for the wireless when I move this week), I wouldn't have to worry about the HDD size difference.

There are some versions of the arcade that have small internal (flash? not sure, I haven't seen more than a handful of them) memory instead of a harddrive. In that case, you'd need to briefly get the console working again using one of those back-alley techniques and then copy the files over to a memory card before it dies again.

Awesome, I googled that and found a bit of info off the cache and it's exactly what I want. I will lose 6 years of saved games but most I would never play again (Kameo anyone?) anyways... only a few recent games will lose stuff.

And to the hard drive, I had a 20, now I have a 250, I want to use the 250 :)

Good stuff, can't wait to get back to Fallout.

I hate the thought of loosing all those save files. Is there any way to back up your 360 hard drive?

You can but in involves either buying an extra peripheral (xSata and I'm not sure they even make these anymore), thumb drive, or removing the HDD and attaching it to your computer (voiding warranty). Those are the only ways I know, but I suppose there could be another way.

Doing a periodic backup with a thumbdrive is probably the easiest.

I moved my profile (and there for my game saves) to a 16GB thumb drive. I have two 360s and it helps being able to use my profile on either of them when I want.

If you have the transfer cable, you can hook your hard drive up to a computer (without removing it from the case or anything like that) and then use a third-party application to copy anything off the hard drive. Doing it this way gets around any restrictions on saved games that cannot usually be copied.
