How to copy files off an old iMac?

A co-worker gave me one of the original iMacs (can't remember what shade of green this is called), but asked if I could copy her pictures (3.7 gigs) & e-mail contacts off of it and put them on her new PC (non-Mac).
I put in a flash drive, but it didn't have the drivers for it.
Is there an easier way to do this or am I going to find drivers for OS 8.x and/or format this USB drive?

3 options come to mind:

1) An external drive of some kind.

2) Pull out the HDD and stick it in the PC. You will probably need some software in order to read the mac format.

3) Copy the files via ethernet. I think FTP would be easiest.

Usually it takes a mac to read a mac hard drive. This works to see it in windows.

If you pulled the drive and could hook it to another Mac, then this adapter would work.

The pictures should not be a problem to copy once you figure out how to read the drive, but without running the drive in the system, getting the contacts off and imported into something is probably going to be a pain. If it was running you could see if there is an export to .csv function, otherwise to get the contacts it may take the same mac os to read the mail programs format.

Older macs had network too. Hook it up and copy over.
