I want to overwrite my winsock.dll file because I Think a program might have changed it for the worse. I see the file "winsock.dl_" on the CD, how do I copy this to my drive to replace my current file.

Winsock.dll cannot be swapped out by a program.

If something does, WFP will detect it and replace the altered copy with one from DLLcache.

If you still want to shoot yourself in the foot here is how:

use the expand command to expand from a .dl_ to a dll.

The copy command in recovery console is also capable of expanding on the fly. Just do:

copy sourcepath\<filename>.dl_ destinationpath\<filename>.dll

The incomplete file extension indicates that the file is compressed as a .cab file and has to be extracted from the cab using the EXPAND applet found in the i386 folder on the XP CD.
