I know this has been discussed before but I'm still lost. I'm not looking to become an expert in file formats, DivX, MPEG4, codecs, and all that. Can someone point me in the right direction please? I've located all kinds of files like VirtualDub, DeCSS, FlashMPEG, VobDec, etc. But they all seem to assume a higher level of understanding than I possess.
All I want to do is copy a few DVDs (that I already bought) to a file so I can watch them on my laptop computer when away from home, The laptop doesn't have a DVD player. My home computer and laptop can transfer files over ethernet, so a few GB is no big deal. But if I can put the movies on a CDR it would be better.
1. How do I get the files off the DVD onto the HD?
I know you use a program like DeCSS but when I try it, I get about 5 separate files and can't figure out how to merge them together. They seem to be more of the preview and 'extras' that come on DVDs rather than the movie itself.
2. How do I convert the files, once on the HD, to AVI or MPEG4 or whatever they need to be?
3, How do I save it all as 1 movie file that will run under something like PowerDVD or Windows Media Player off the HD or CDR?
Pointers to websites that actually explain or give step-by-step instructions would be greatly appreciated. Or, if you know how to do it ... I'm listening!
