What do you mean 'pop on'? Does it just snap right in? How hard is it to get the cover off?

I modded my bios to ramp up the fan speed more agressively. Under load while overclocked, my card stays at around 64c.

You have to stick screws into the grill. I used smaller than normal fan screws with a sharp tip to get them to dig in better.
I tried this on two different 8800gts cards of this flavour both in the case and out and the temp difference is huge. I'm now running at 43 idle & 55 peek as apposed to 54 idle & 78 peek. The gpu diode runs somewhat cooler but the gpu itself is far and away better off.
By the way I also ran aggressive fan speeds with rivatuner and this is still far superior.

I suspected as much. I think the whole design is more form over function. I don't know the CFM rating of those "squirrel cage" centrifugal fans, but I'm pretty sure the more standard fans will outperform them easily. Most all of the good aftermarket coolers are fairly simple, with a beefy bank of aluminum fins, and a 80mm or larger regular off-the-shelf fan plunked on top, and they work well.

I guess the space contraints also have a bit to do with it, so they have to compromise by the using centrifugal fans.

So how high can you overclock your card now?

Is it noisier than before?

Can you still leave the stock fan running, or does it interfere with the new 80mm one?

Thanks for posting this, it looks like a great idea!

there is no purpose to leave the stock fan on. Without the plastic to create a wind tunnel effect, it serves no purpose.

Yeah unplug the default fan as it serves no purpose to keep it on.

Noise totally depends on the fan you use. Mine runs at 2600rpm and it's about as loud as the stock fan on high.
Overclocks I just don't know about as of yet. I'm in the middle of setting up a new system and will hopefully get around to trying out later in the week.
I've done this via the scientific method by using two different cards in two different environments but what we really need is a second individual to try this and post their numbers so that people can know I'm not BS'ing. The numbers I posted are a pretty bold statement and need to be confirmed by another party..

Well, I just did the mod, and can confirm your findings!

Under load in Crysis, my core is at 62C. Before the mod, it was around 71C.

I've managed a stable overclock of 648/1620/972.

I disabled my fan in the bios. :)

thats all bananas for bored monkeys - check my overclock - fan speed controlled by rivatuner and it between 70-80% most of the time which is fine by me since the audio is so damn loud

good try though

wais is this mod for 8800gts320/640 or gts512 ?

Probably both, but my card (and perry404's card) are both g80 based. Your card overclocks higher because it's g92.

Just an update: My core just hit 70c while playing GRID for an hour or so. I have a feeling that over time, this solution may not be the best. It doesn't exhaust the heat out the back like the stock cooler does. I'm going to increase my case ventilation a bit and see if that helps.

I'm also wondering what affect a 92mm fan will have.

Good ventilation is obviously important.
My case may not be a fair testing grounds as it has 8 120mm fans so poor ventilation was not an issue..
Be nice to see more people with regular cases try this and post case specs.

With the 120mm case fan in my Antec case turned on 'high' instead of 'low', my maximum core temperature hovers around 60C now instead of 70C.

I guess the 10-15C drop is worth it, but in my case it did add to my computer's noise output somewhat.

Thanks again for the tip, Perry404!

That's a pretty sweet mod. :) If temps are building up over time and you have a MicroCenter near you, can try picking up a few of these Antec slot Blower $1.99 Shipping kinda kills it, but I've got one installed and seems to keep to its published specs.
