So how do I go about convincing my boss that I need a new computer here at work? Does anyone have an ROI calculator I could show him some numbers from?

That depends - are you posting to AnandTech from your current work computer, or are you posting from home?

My current system is a PIII 733 w/ 512MB... It's quickly approaching 4 years old now. I am a web developer and I do everything fine basic code writing to graphics work with PhotoShop. I also do document scanning and other related tasks. I spend probably 20-30 minutes of my day waiting for my computer to do things.

What if I said I was posting from a geosynchronous location where neither answer was correct? ;)

Yes I'm posting from work!

see if it's possible to upgrade the components. With some of those deals Dell is offering (nicely setup box for ~$400), it'd be hard for him to pass on it, assuming he has extra funds to toss around.

Upgrades on the OptiPlex are few and far between. Memory is about the only thing that can be upped. Video is built in, processor only goes to 1GHz. That's about it for this machine.

We have the funds, I just have to convince him somehow that we would benefit from getting me a new machine.

in all fairness, like Homerboy said, convince us first and it'll make it much easier for you to talk to your boss about.

damn, I work at the school computer lab at UCSD and just got "upgraded" to a P3 800 mhz machine....and I was lucky to get that :)

Tell them you're unable to work to your full potential with all the "wasted" time waiting for your computer to "work".

He did convince me.. he needs more RAM for what he does it seems. RAM will speed all those things up considerably
Sure a nicer CPU would be cool and all, but it likely wouldnt help too much in speeding things up.

What kinda HD you have? and how much is used?

16GB drive, 12GB used and I don't stored any work on my local drive, it's all on the network. It's a 7200 RPM drive, not sure of the manufacturer, probably IBM or Maxtor as that was what Dell was using at the time.

he he , I have been working on an 800mhz POS since I started at my last job. Finally I just said I need a laptop. I was able to justify it because I need the mobility. So now I am getting a new laptop with cdrw and best of all I can play some good games on it!

A laptop would be great for me too since I also go to school and I could work at home on the weekends too. I thought about throwing that bit of info in to sweeten the deal a little.

Here is what I would do. Assuming you are literally waiting for 20-30 minutes every day for your computer, I would take my annual salary divide by 2000 and then divide by 60. This roughly gives you your salary per minute.

I would then divide this number into the price of a new computer or new RAM stick. This will give you the number of minutes you will need to wait until the computer or RAM is paid off.

Finally, divide this by 20 or 30 (whichever is closer to the number of waisted minites per day). This will give you the number of business days you will work before the purchase is paid off.

This assumes that the new computer or RAM will reduce the waisted minutes to nothing.

Honestly I think that is a pretty decent machine. What OS are you running? If it hasn't been formatted in almost 4 years, do it. It will be much faster.

i think one way is to learn some new artistic thing that taxes the cpu of the computer a whole lot. show your boss the new pretty stuff, and hint that it is terribly slow on your machine.

at work, we get new machines for every project that we have. (its written into the grants) So right now Ive got 3 desktops over 2ghz, a crapload of desktops under 2ghz, and a laptop for working at conferences.

Id give you one if i could get away with it.

I have 2 machines, one for testing/development and my everyday work machine. They're both the same specs though.

heh. I'm having that same battle right now. I have a p3 500 w/ 128MB RAM and a crap PCI vid card.

I'm expected to quickly sort/use: a 150K entry access database, new GIS/GPS software, a mainframe database, Microstation, an online database, and another mapping program. I'm supposed to use several of those at the same time.

Heck, it takes 2 minutes just for lotus notes 6 to load.
