How To Convert MP2 into MP3 files?

Is it possible to do this directly? I could of course first convert them to wav and then to MP3, but that's not what I want to do.

You may be able to do this with LAME. Use the switch --mp2input to tell LAME that it's an MP2 file you're giving it. I'm not sure whether or not it can go straight to MP3 from MP2 or not or whether it just decodes MP2 to WAV. You can use Razorlame for a frontend.
