How to control my HTPC from another room?

So I've pretty much finished my HT room which means 90% of my electronic stuffs is now residing in the den on one end of the house. I plan to have a set of speakers set up in the living room (next room over) connected to my music server, but I really don't want to have to go back and forth all the time to change songs, volume, whatever.

Anyone have clever suggestions for a remote? I have Wi-Fi up and running, have a laptop, a Harmony 680 remote, and a Palm Tungsten C at my disposal.

If you have Windows Media Center Edition PC and a PocketPC, there are several WiFi remote software packages. 😀

Oh wait, you don't 😛

I'd just get a Snapstream Firefly remote (RF) and map buttons to your mediaplayer of choice.

Use a plugin for winamp that allows control over a network. You set it up and simply visit a webpage with the HTPC's IP and they page comes up, lets you view the entire playlist, remove/add songs, control all of winamp's main controls.

ATI Remote Wonder is a RF remote that can work through walls.
I have the Harmony remote that is WMCE-compatible and will be installing MCE 2005 on this comp shortly.

Injury, that sounds pretty cool.

What do you think of MCE 2005?

I'm thinking of buying that along with the new Hauppauge WinTV-PVR500 Dual Tuner TV card 😛

it's a good combo. mce works 90% of the time. I keep having a problem with nvdvd decoders and mce so I swithched to sage TV for everything.

There is a lot of decoder/codec shuffling that needs to be done with MCE, it's quite daunting. They need to integrate some sort of codec chooser within the interface to simplify things, or buy somebody's mpeg2 codec and integrate it into MCE. I've tried just about every decoder available, and am sticking with PowerDVD 6. WinDVD had the best PQ, but the SPDIF passthrough kept unchecking itself whenever I switched from watching a DVD to TV.

The easy free solution would be to download TightVNC and remote control the HTPC wirelessly from your laptop.
