My old (we're talking 2007ish old) no name power supply doesn't spin fast enough (we're talking 40rpm, yes I actually counted it), and it's uncomfortably hot to the touch, it doesn't necessarily burn you, but it's hot enough to make you feel like something has to be done about it. I know how dangerous it is to open a PSU, so I'd rather do that as my very last resort. So the question is: Is there a free software that can control the PSU's fan speed? I have SpeedFan but I don't seem to be able to control anything by it. If this cannot be solved in software, I was thinking maybe I can disconnect the PSU's fan, and connect it directly to a fan header on the motherboard? Is that even possible? Can the PSU refuse to turn on due to not having the fan connected to it?
My CPU is Intel Core 2 Duo E4600, the motherboard is Asus P5K, and 3GB of DDR2 RAM (yayyy). Oh and there's no case involved here, the whole thing sits on a desk.
Thank you.
